01The quiet shift
One day your dog takes the stairs a little more carefully. Your cat stops jumping to the top shelf. It's gradual, and easy to miss — but once you see it, you start to see everything differently.
Dogs are broadly considered seniors from around seven years old, though large breeds age faster and a Great Dane is old at six while a small terrier may be sprightly at ten. Cats tend to hit senior territory around eleven. Neither milestone means decline is imminent — it means the rules of care shift a little.
The most useful thing you can own for an ageing pet is a good relationship with your vet. Twice-yearly check-ups (rather than annual) become genuinely worthwhile once they're older; bloodwork catches kidney and thyroid changes early, before symptoms appear. If you notice weight loss, increased thirst, stiffness on waking, or a sudden change in behaviour, don't wait for a scheduled visit. These are the nudges worth acting on.
At home, comfort upgrades matter more than any supplement. An orthopaedic bed — dense memory foam rather than a thin cushion — makes a real difference for arthritic joints. For cats, a litter tray with a low entrance means they don't have to step high to get in; it's a small thing that removes a daily discomfort. Raised food and water bowls ease neck strain for dogs. Ramps or small steps beside the sofa let them keep their spot beside you without the jump that's starting to hurt.
Exercise doesn't stop — it adjusts. Shorter, more frequent walks serve an older dog better than one long exhausting one. Cats still need play; they just need a gentler version of it, a few minutes with a wand toy rather than an acrobatic session. The couch health check — a weekly hands-on once-over for lumps, sore spots and coat changes — becomes especially valuable now.
The senior years can be genuinely lovely. Slower walks mean more sniffing. A cat who once had too much energy for your lap will finally sit in it for an hour. Pay attention, stay curious about what they need, and the last chapter often turns out to be one of the best.
